The D’Entrecasteaux Channel (known simply as ‘The Channel region’ by locals) and Huon Valley is home to hundreds of small, diverse farms. Ranging from cheese, to spirits, artist studios, cider, even wooden boat cruises. We will visit the many passionate people behind some of the best food and beverages in the southern region of Tasmania. We design this day around specific guests interests, needs, dietary requests, flavours and tastes, for that season. So the itinerary is just a suggestion and this will depend on season that is booked. This tour allows guests to experience the diverse, fresh produce on any given season of the year.

Depending on guests preferences and the timing of your visit, we will assemble an itinerary that explores the best of what the Huon Valley and Channel region has to offer. Amongst the orchards, cheese factories and wineries there are artist studios, local markets and many other activities, for the creative and curious. Not to mention a private cruise down the Huon River with a glass of local Pinot Noir.  A visit to the Australian Wooden Boat Centre, or a visit to Frank’s Cider or Willie Smiths for their cider and distilled apple spirits, may sit amongst your customised experience.

Example Itinerary:

Pick up 8:30am from guest accommodation in the Hobart area. Head south along the channel, passing small towns while sharing stories of their industry and history. Drop into our friends at Grandvewe cheese and Hartshorn Distilling, where a local family has set the world alight with their sheep whey vodka and gin, as well as their delicious cheeses. The opportunities are:An Alchemist gin experience, butter making old school action and of course a tasting session of their cheese and spirits. We then discover one of the hottest little wineries on the Island, Mewstone wines, where a pre-planned selection of tastings is available, and it won’t be hard to realize how to relax with the backdrop right in front of us. Again, we are amongst small talented family locals, with sensational wines of new and old variety. It’s time to head over the Snug Tiers and into the historic and creative Huon Valley town of Cygnet, where we will relax and debrief the mornings’ activities with lunch at one of our favourite local eateries. We visit an artist or crafts person, such as great friends of ours who offer a creative demonstration in the art of Japanese pottery. Explore rolling orchards, stopping to pick up some cherries or other fresh fruit along the way (in season of course).

After lunch we make our way to Franklin and have options:

  1. Visit the Australian Wooden Boat Centre at Franklin, for some amazing maritime stories.
  2. (At additional cost): Step aboard the historic wooden boat, to discover the Huon River Story while enjoying a local wine.
  3. Enjoy a local and crisp apple cider tasting. Before heading back to Hobart.
